I've used Kerosene for quite a few years with no problems. Flash point of Diesel is around 140 deg and Kerosene is around 100 deg. Flash point is the temp where it produces enough vapor to ignite. So unless your parts washer gets above 100 deg Kerosene should be safe enough.
Used to use Stoddards, great solvent but the cost is too high anymore.
