That is true to a point. I think you would pull the throttle to initiate the change, but the decomp lever would do it's thing automatically. That is only somewhat true with the letter series gas start diesels.
IIRC the manual says that it is a failsafe so that you don't run the throttle up without changing over. My MD will not open the decomp lever completely. The adjustments are all in the service manual. It is a simple 15 step process. It starts with the decomp valves in the head. It then moves to all the stuff behind the carb. Then it jumps across to "the diesel side" (as I like to call it) and all that friction disc area. Then it goes up the rods and your done.
