Amp meter won't tell you battery voltage which is nice to know to tell if you are over charging or undercharging. You can put in three amps into a full charge warm battery and still be over charging. With a variable resistor you can adjust the charge rate to suit the battery and temp conditions by observing the voltmeter. Not a big deal one way or the other, just more information.
