The only way for the tractor to have just one forward speed is to have the pump swash plate stuck at a forward position angle. If the tractor speeds up when the lever is moved forward in the second half of the range it would mean that there is servo control to the motor.
If the tractor will pull a load while going forward most likely the pump and motor are still in pretty good shape. In that case most likely it can be repaired without splitting the tractor.
If I had to venture a guess as to what might be wrong, given what you have posted, I would say the anchor pin for the lower end of the servos has come apart and the pump servo dropped down and has gotten wedged in the forward position.
