not to cause a major dispute here or anything it was a common way of checking your charging system years ago when mechanics would regularly disconnect a batt cable to check to see if a charging system was working. if an alt/gen is not putting out the engine will die once the batt is disconnected.
the batts purpose is to crank an engine to get it started, once started an alt/gen takes over supplying juice for sparkies, lights and alittle left to charge the batt.
unless im missing something here i have never had an older car/truck/or tractor explode by taking a batt cable off.
