According to IH literature, the share is supposed to usually outlast 3 points. I've never found this to be true. 2 points to 1 share is about the best I've ever done, and by then, the share is worn to the frog.
IH also had some literature, in about 1953-55, that explained that the Plow Chief was a universal-style replacement for most conventional-style bottoms. The conventional style bottoms were falling out of favor because of a lack of good blacksmiths (according to IH). In the same literature, they mocked those companies who were using those new-fangled, flimsy throw-away shares, as they were thin, bent easily, and wore poorly, and weren't as economical as the other companies claimed. The Super Chief bottom was surely in development at this time. IH should have learned something about throw-away shares, especially with the propaganda they were spewing, but they didn't. They had serious problems with bending and breaking of the early Super Chief shares.
