well, I just did mine last winter. I took the shifter off to flush out the accumulated crud. There are 2 oil channels that direct splashed oil to the front and rear bearings. I was glad I took the shifter off, as the rear channel was completely crudded up.
Really not a bad job. Drain the old oil, take the shifter plate off. Flush with kero. Let drain overnight. put plugs back in. fill 'er up. replace shifter.
