Coil failure is often the issue. If the Previous owner used the original coil running it on 14 volts will make it heat up and go bad. If you can rest your hand on the coil when it stops, and it has a nice blue 1/4" spark, the coli is OK. If it is the original, it must have a ballast resistor in its input wire to lower the voltage to the 6 volt range. If it has a different coil, the coil must be "12volt for use with no external resistor" if it has a resistor, the coil should be 6volt, or say on it "12v for use with external resistor".
