Standard Ball bearings have inner and outer races that cover about 1/5th of the ball diameter in the groove of the race. A Deep groove series covers about 25% to 28% of the ball diameter in the groove depth. The difference is that the Standard bearing is not rated for axiel thrust loads, only radial loads, with incidental thrust levels. A deep groove bearing is able to deal with substantial axial loads in combination with Radial loads. The front bearing in a Farmall steering gearbox (several models with this same fundamental design, beyond H and M series.) use this bearing as the sole thrust control on the worm! Jim
