I agree with Kirk about using F4 brushes, they will work fine. I have an E4A that I just cleaned up and put new points in. I had it in the vice, and put wires in that I have in a harness to check mags. All 4 wires have a plug at the end of them and they are are grounded to the mag. I can get a good blue spark spinning the mag by hand in this setup. I would get the brush in the cap and re-assembled to do my testing if I were you. There is not a good way to get clean, consistent continuity using the wire as shown in your pictures. The wire works, but it needs to be going to a clean bare metal surface. It is even better going to the mag frame. IMHO.
