thanks for your replies guys. I got worried that I might have damaged the oil pump and/or the pick up tube so I had to try to take the pan off. I lucked out! It did come off without taking the cross member off, but I think it might be a little harder to put it back on and keep the gasket where it should be. Live and learn. And the oil pump and pickup tube were undamaged too.
