Jim my recommendation would be to drop the oil pan and see if you have a bunch of sludge in the bottom. If you do, you might want to stick with non-detergent. If there is sludge in the pan, you will more than likely have sludge around the rocker arms and also in the push rod inspection cavity. If it is clean and the oil inlet screen is clean, then I would about guess that it has been running with detergent oil. I have converted two Hs to detergent with no problems. However I had to change the oil and filter on Old Red H about every 20 hours for 3 or 4 changes before it cleared out.
