The man that told you the bushings would "just slip right in" was either dumber than a post or yanking your chain really hard! The bushings should be a tight fit, possibly even a press fit. Then they must be reamed to fit the spindle on each side. Norm is probably right about the thrust bearings too. You might be able to put the bushings in the freezer for a couple of days and push them in if the axle ends are good and hot from the sun, but I can't help much more than that. Good luck, Phil
