To start, or Not to start ?

Should a person even try to start an engine that has not run for a few years? I have a WK-40 and an AC 20-35. Both have good compression and all the controls are free. Both apear to be pumping oil. I have started F-20s and Model Ts after long rests, but they are not quite as hard to find parts for and I never worried about it. Would you light them up or tear down for inspection and cleaning first? Thanks Bill
