Do you (or did you) hear a click or a sizzle coming from the direction of the battery? I suspect corrosion between the post and the clamp.

I would take off the battery clamps and clean them and the battery posts with corrosion remover from the auto supply store, then hook them back up and tighten them. Next, do the same thing at the cable connections on the solenoid and the starter. When you get everything clean and working well, coat everything with corrosion inhibitor.

If this guesswork doesn't help, then go with the voltmeter.
