The starter wouldn't really care what voltage it was. It may die a little quicker, but not too likely. You would need a 12v charging system to charge your 12v battery. If you kept the 6v system it would only put out 7.2v and not get the job done. A 12v coil is one way to convert a tractor or you can use a resister to drop your 12v to 6v. From the factory none of the letter series had a solenoid.
