There are two types like that I am familiar with. One , you take snap ring out of groove near top of cyl by turning it out through that groove and it sounds like that is the one you have. They wear a groove above snap ring making it difficult to pull apart but you have no other choice than pull rod out. Like hook on with a tractor. The other style have a snap ring on the bottom of piston and you go through the inlet port and push snap ring off.
