Line up the pointer in the flywheel opening with 18° BTDC. With the pump drive shaft in the retarded position, install the pump with the marks aligned. If the engine does not start readily after the fuel system is bled rotate the pump shaft one turn and try again.
If you work at it hard enough they will run with the pump 360° off but they will have no power and really smoke.
