It was a dry sleave engine, It had a lot of power, it was also used in the 560, 656, 706 TD-9, etc. As long as you kept a strong battery, (batterys) and good glow plugs in it it was not hard to crank. It had a thing about cracking heads, always run one at idle for a few before shutting down and if you ran it hot never add cold water to it even if still running, let it cool on it's own. If you run one out of fuel it is a bit tricky to get it running again, you usally have to bleed it all the way to the injectors. I have used, owned severel tractors with the D-282 in them over the years and I was pleased with them, we also used them for pump motors for drainage. They are not hard to overhaul and parts are reasonable for them.
