I don t think it will be the stat based on the description of the problem. It will run a long time before getting hot correct ? Thermostat is there to control minimum temp and will cause overheating if stuck, but within minutes of starting the tractor, not after using it. Sounds like the radiator is partly clogged to me. Water pump impeller problems are extremely rare in my expierence (25 years in auto repair),slowly building of heat to boilover makes me think the rad is not shedding the heat the engine is making. Head crack or gasket is also a suspect, causes air pockets in cooling system which disrupts flow and makes hot spots. Makes sure fan pulls good airflow too.
