Don't "tweak" until you have a good voltmeter on the system! There was probably some variation in exactly what the regulators were used on these things, so I'm going to advise you to get a repair manual of some sort. I have an M and a SM with 8volt batteries. I didn't even have to mess with the regulator on mine.
