One of the lugs is actually like a piece of key stock. One side of the coupler has a slot instead of the lug sticking out. You slide the coupler up into one of the slots and then line the other one up and slide in the key. There is a hole in the middle of the key to accept a small cotter pin through the coupler and the key. The cotter pin is only about a 3/32 - 1/8 inch diameter rather than the 1/4 inch the the H couplers use.
