If the engine has been thoroughly cleaned and overhauled using the newer gasket materials available then the current detergent oils are fine. I do not like mult-viscostiy oils because the tolerances are not the same in the old tractors as in today's newer engines. This can lead to lower oil pressures, particularly at idle when the engine is hot and to higher oil consumption. To put a detergent oil is an old, not overhauled, engine is asking for trouble. Often, the old build up "cake" is 1/4 inch or more and to wake this up is to wake the devil. Clogged filters and sump screens on oil pumps are too often the consequence. Wait until the engine is overhauled until switching to detergent oil. This is my experience and is my opinion and works best for me and my "tired" iron.
