I don't claim to be an authority, but as I understand it there should be a total of about 3 ohms of resistance through the coil and any resistor on a 12 volt system. A 6 volt system would have about 1.5 ohms. Some coils have the resistor built-in (so there is 3 ohms between the terminals). Some use an external resistor so there is only 1.5 ohms across the coil, use as is with a 6 volt system or add a 1.5 ohm resistor in series for 12 volt. Also check the voltage when the generator is being turned. I don't understand what you mean by a 12 volt system with the original generator unless you had it rewound and got a new regulator. Get the system working right, that coil could explode.
