Old gauges can be dry of the internal dampening fluid used on the very small bearings holding the needle. The regulators and generators are very electrically noisy and produce good voltage and charge well while the contacts vibrate and chatter to control output, making the amp gauge go wild. A new meter might make the issue go away. A 100mfd 300volt electrolytic capacitor to ground attached to the Load side of the meter might also dampen it some. Jim
