to do it correctly, you need to pull the crank out the back of the block. yes, this takes a big specialty puller specific for tha job. Hitting it with a sledge is a dumb idea. it would be like watching a jewler work on your wifse wedding ring with a screwdriver and a mallet
if your bearings roll smooth, and you dont need any crank work done, LEAVE IT IN THERE!! its a fairly big chore to get it out then back in
