Warner - What do we know indeed! The only SMTA's I've seen have been here in western NY and southern Ontario - not exactly a representative production sample.
Incidentally an SMTA diesel (stock 12 volt electrics) I looked at last summer had a seasonal disconnect. Could it be in addition to ease cold weather starting it was also provided to reduce wear on to moving parts inside the IPTO when PTO is not needed?
It probably also saves a bit of fuel when when it's disconnected.
