If you have the timing marks all lined up with the ytwo dots on the cam lined up with the two dots on the mag drive the rotor should be pointed around the 2 oclock position. Did you have the end of the mag off then you could have got the gears out of time. Just remove the three screws and turn the gear so the rotor points to #1 on the cap and now is the time to do it before the front cover is on as you then can turn the engine over and make sure the mag fires a plug with cap and wirews on.
