It's possible that there is some oil in the bottom of the res. that'senough to keep things lubed, but not enough for the pump to function. It is also possible that the pump is broken, and not working anyhow, as was the case with my M when I bought it. If you never intend to use the hydraulics, I would remove the drive coupler so you don't have to worry about it, but will prevent dammage in the case that someone in the future does want to use it.
