Lance - I had the same problem when I converted my Super M. Turned out to be worn thru insulation on a wire inside the headlight support - was grounding thru the support and causing the lights to stay dark, and the dimmer resistor to heat up like wires inside a toaster

Replacing the bad wiring solved the problem. Now with the switch at "D", the resistor gets quite warm to the touch but does not turn red, smoke, etc.
