Serial Number- the chassis serial number on an original prototype would be a brass tag, marked "Gas Power Engineering", and have a Q-serial number, and for your era, a four digit serial number. Not only would you see this somewhere on the chassis, but you might see several of these tags on a tractor, for various parts.

Parts Numbers- you would see cast into the parts a different part number on some parts than a production tractor. Instead of "1234DB" or "123456R1" you would see "1234-56-789" or a similar format, with dashes between three groups of numbers.

On a preproduction tractor, you should see normal parts numbers, but the serial numbers would be below 501 (the normal start for IH serial numbers at that point) or a very low serial number in the 501s (like 501-512).

Prototype tractors are extremely rare, as IH had a policy of destroying them. Preproduction tractors also had that policy, although more of them do seem to show up.
