Robert with the distributor cap off see if you can see a spark as the points open. If not, see if you have voltage on the line from the coil to the distributor. If not, it sounds like a weak coil. Make sure your point gap is .020. If you have any wiggle in the rotor shaft, set the points slightly tighter at around .017. If you have voltage down to the distributor, I would suspect a bad condensor.
