You won't have a hollow ram with a double acting, so everything I wrote above will be pretty useless, I'm afraid. Seems kind of strange they wouldn't bleed, though, perhaps you have a bad piston seal and what you are experiencing is just leakage past the seal. Either way, you really need to get the air out. When you compress oil, nothing much happens since it is incompressible, but when you compress air or any gas, it heats up, and at hydraulic system pressures, it can get REALLY hot, possibly damaging seals.
