there is probably an alloy that could work, but the shaft is not that heavy, and its integrity is a safety related concern. Removing weight from the cast iron of the bolster is more likely to be shedding pounds. removal of the crank start shafts, a wooden dowel would look original, and break off if you passed by to close (rather than taking out a kidney as it does now). running on a small motor cycle battery and starting it from a jump. eliminates the generator regulator and assorted brackets.
