If it slips on the low side it is either out of adjustment or needs an overhaul. There are no other choices. The principle of adjustment is simple, you adjust the main clutch to specs, then adjust the TA clutch so that it releases at the tail end of the main clutch engagement, if I remember right. The procedure to do that requires a manual, unless someone else that types faster than me wants to do it. You are correct that with the lever back the TA clutch is disengaged. But it will not go back into direct until you push the TA lever forward.
