That is what happens when the bearing fails. A ball falls out and then gets trapped between the bull gear and the housing, and since there isn't any room to spare, the housing cracks. My 1940 M has a patch consisting of a length of sheet metal and some heavy gasket material. The patch is held in place with about a dozen or so small machine screws and lock washers. The screws thread into holes that were drilled and tapped. The patch is kind of ugly, but it works, and it is definitely a part of the tractors history, so it will just stay that way.
