Batterys as described are from ground to 6volt battery (1) negative terminal from battery 1 positive terminal to Battery 2 negative terminal, From battery 2 positive to starter system heavy wires. This is 12 volt total with a negative ground. It can be charged in two ways, either will work. A 6volt charger can be placed on Battery 1 with Pos to Pos, Neg to Neg. Then when it is charged tha charger can be placed on Battery 2 Pos to Pos, Neg to Neg. When both are charged it is good to go.
The other way is to hook a 12 volt charger to Battery 2 Negative, and Battery 1 Positive. This will charge both at the same time.
Specific gravity testing would be a good check on cell condition. and state of charge. Jim
