Main difference other than the choke rod is that the main jet on the M carb is adjusted by turning the screw in until it stumbles, out until smooth. There are probably other internal differences, I have not checked, someone else can answer that. On SH and SM-up carbs the main jet adjustment is 5 turns out for max power, turned in about 0.5-2 turns for lighter loads. The carb on my 460 and Super H work best at 5 turns out.
