You can use the four positon switch no problem. When converting to 12 volt with either generator and regulator or alternator with internal regulator the low positon on switch will just not be used. The rear light should not be hooked through the dimmer coil on switch, only the head lights. Rear light should have a selector switch to have white or red right at the light. There were a couple different ways they did that but with same results. Over the years it is hard to tell how they got hooked up, if they turned the switch and lights came on it was considered, well, hey they work.
