There are others here that can explain how a TA functions better than me but they were designed to basically give you a high and low range for each gear and to be able to do it on the fly with out stopping or using the clutch. When used correctly they are quite handy and reliable. Over the years many of them have gone bad, mostly on the low range due to not being used properly. Allowing the tractor to coast with the TA in low range will eventually cause it to fail. When that happens the tractor still works in the high range but no low range and thus no TA. There are parts that just wear and cause an issue on the low range. When buying a tractor one wants to always check out the TA - many previous owners did not know how to use them properly and now they don't work.
