I have seen M's with a set up similar to what Bill was tal;king about. They had a shield around the mufler with a pipe runnint to the air cleaner intake. Warmed the air up enough to keep it from icing up. Didn't look real cool, but I guess it worked. They use the same type of thing in airplanes to stop carburator ice from forming.
