The problem with so many transmissions is that rain can enter the case through the shifter rod if the tractor is left out. There is also some condensation that can accumulate in the case. As was suggested, first drain the crud out, then take the cover off, pour kerosene or diesel fuel in the case, drive the Cub around to slosh and clean the case, and then drain the swill out before putting new oil in the case. I have made a seal for the shifter rod by taking the spring off, installing a flat washer above the dust cup that has a slightly oversize hole to fit around the upward protrusion of the dust cup, rolled a snug O ring down to the washer and installed another close rod fitted washer over the top of the O ring. Then install the spring which squeezes the O ring between the two washers and against the shaft and keeps the rain from entering the tranny. The whole repair costs about 50 cents.
