12 volts to a 6 volt starter probably wont damage the starter unless you were to let it run so long it overheated, butheck too long run times hard loaded can harm even a 12 volt stater ran at 12 volts.
It can be a bit tougher on the starter drive mechanism but I never had any go bad. It can be less harsh on the starter drive if the 12 volt battery is lighter duty.
