Is the manifold so bad it cannot be machined.Head can be machined also. Bolt it on with out gaskets and try a feeler gauge between head and manifold to check for warpage or even do that with gasket installed, won't be as accurate though. No sealer will work on manifold gaskets. Far as timing just put it on number one tdc comp stroke, align rotor with number one on cap, turn dist direction of normal rotation until points are closed , then turn back opposite of normal rotation until points just begin to open, clamp it down. Oil pump needs to be oriented correctly for distributor to be in right .
