I heard some old timers talking about planes and the cold war. The story was the USA captured a soviet plane and the engineers and mechanics were laughing at all the antique tubes(valves) they found in the electrical panels--not a transistor in the plane. The laughter went on awhile, and then an old guy piped up that in an EMP/nuclear blast situation the soviet plane would be able to (continue to) fly.
true story??? Government need would explain why all your new audiophile, guitar, and electric organ tubes come from the soviet region. karl f
