In many school systems, the concept of phonics was tossed out in favor of the "whole language" concept, where the students are not taught to sound a word out; rather, they are shown a word and are told how to say it. Why did phonics get thrown out? If a student couldn't sound a word out, they "might feel bad", and we couldn't have a kid with hurt feelings and low self-esteem, could we? Self-esteem(and feelings in general) is far more important that core learning these days... is it any wonder high schools graduate illiterate kids?! Anyway, back to old iron...
