I can just pass on what I have learned here. Maybe others can give you more and better information. Weight, power, and dependability would be about equal between gas and diesel. Gas starts easier in the winter. Gas is easier and cheaper to maintain. Diesel will last longer and be more fuel-efficient all other things being equal. Incidentally, IH used the same diesel engine for later model tractors. Now for tricky part - the upgrade was in the rear end. If it has been completed by a dealer there should be a triangular punch mark on the serial number plate. It didn't get done at the factory.
