There were several different water pump castings used on those engines and not all of them have a port in the intake side. The diesels used the port for return from the oil cooler but a lot of gasoline engines did not have the port. Because of that cab manufacturers generally routed the heater return to the bottom of the radiator.
If you use the water pump port you will have much better circulation through your heater.
