Either is just fine The light must be 150 milliamps of load to work reliably, the diode must have its band end toward the alternator terminal. the light or diode is in series with the wire to #1. My illustration is for a mag ignition, and is not designed for a point and coil distributor ign. THe light from a side marker light , or dash illumination light is fine (not a LED type). THe light can be located such that it is like a car idiot light and shows alternator state of operation (in a on off manor). Jim
