Once in a great while a new carb bowl gasket will stick far enough into the bowl to touch the float and interfere with its operation. Trim the inside edge of the gasket flush with the inside edge of the bowl, just to eliminate that possibility. Of course, all carb passages should be clean -- but that's probably preaching to the choir.
Don't give up on the 300U. She's well worth the trouble!
